01

Movement below the tile

Flexible floors, loose boards or weak backgrounds let tiles move. The correct repair may involve the substrate, not simply stronger grout.

02

Corners need a flexible joint

Wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor changes can move differently. A suitable sanitary sealant is often used at these changes instead of rigid grout.

03

Water can make the problem worse

Cracks in wet zones allow more moisture behind the finish. Check for hollow tile, staining or softness and repair the whole affected area rather than one surface line.

What to remember

Find out whether the crack sits over movement, a corner or damaged background before choosing the repair.
